Monisha ran a waste audit in her own kitchen and taught herself to compost. One morning, a musk melon grew in her window planter from her own kitchen scraps.
That small result changed the way she looked at waste. If kitchen waste could become something useful on a Mumbai windowsill, why couldn’t the same idea work at a much larger scale?
A visit to Deonar, one of Asia’s largest dumpsites, turned that question into a mission. Seeing the scale of the problem made one thing clear: waste needs to be dealt with where it is created, not simply trucked away and buried somewhere else.
In 2009, RUR Greenlife began working to make decentralised waste management practical.
Our aerobic biocomposter recreates a natural process: organic waste breaks down with oxygen and naturally occurring microbes, turning kitchen waste into compost.
The technology was granted an Indian Patent in 2020.

Monisha Narke is the Founder and CEO of RUR Greenlife.
After completing her Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at Stanford University, she returned to Mumbai with an engineering mindset and a growing curiosity about waste.
A waste audit in her own kitchen led her to start composting at home. When a musk melon grew in her window planter from her kitchen compost, she saw proof that waste could become a resource.
A visit to Deonar then showed her the other side of the problem: the enormous scale of waste that cities were sending away every day.
That combination of a personal experiment and a much larger problem became the foundation for RUR.
For 17 years, Monisha and the RUR team have worked to make on-site composting simple enough to be adopted across homes, communities, institutions and commercial kitchens.
